Following the successful launch of Case Scenario’s Apple accessories in South Africa, Anthony Keyworth secured the South African distribution license for the Berlin Boombox.

The Berlin Boombox was conceptualised and designed by Axel Pfaender, a Berlin-based creative. He successfully raised enough capital to fund the business via Kickstarter – the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects.

Inspired by the old ghetto blasters from the 80s, the Berlin Boombox is a speaker system made from super-durable corrugated cardboard. The product comes flat-packed as a DIY kit. Once assembled, it’s compatible with all 3.5mm audio jack devices including the iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

To generate buzz and promote the launch of the Berlin Boombox in South Africa, ten of Cape Town and Johannesburg’s top clubs, finest bars and coffee establishments were invited to compete in a Berlin Boombox design challenge, to customise their very own Berlin Boombox.

The top three designs were presented on South Africa’s leading popular culture blog, We-Are-Awesome. Readers were encouraged to vote for their favourite design. The campaign generated over 1,700 votes in 48 hours, which named Deluxe Coffeeworks as the winner, followed by &Union in second place and Jason Bakery in third place.

The campaign successfully seeded the product into the South African market and resulted in a large local retailer placing an order in excess of 300 units. Thereafter, word-of-mouth spread and Antanna began supplying a number of local brick-and-mortar retailers as well as e-commerce specialists.
